Anyone can cover Beatles songs and do they ever. But to capture the essence or one just as powerful hardly any bands have done Beatles covers worth remembering - Sonic Youth’s version of ‘Within You, Without You’ probably takes the ring but even that isn’t a version I care much about one way or other. Sole exception is Laibach’s Let It Be which just kind of upended the whole charade and pointed the way to our brave new world. No irony or derision intended. And the only artist who can bring the authentic passion and magic of the original and the delivery is every bit as heartfelt as the original. When he sings these words he means them. Maybe someone else spoke them somewhere sometime but now it’s him talking from the heart - Elliot Smith - a man who gave the Beatles the respect that is worthy of them.
