It is quite something when the sound of your instrument is so remarkably different from others, that you are immediately recognized; Glenn Miller found the sound when he placed the clarinet in the lead; this made him immortal. Shearing was one of the greats and unlike some, he had a long life. This version of Mambo Inn made me learn it and I now do my own humble version on the piano. Shearing was always brilliant at Latin beats.

Brilliant arrangement! I was sorting my jazz record collection tonight and realized I have about 20 LPs by George Shearing, such a great jazz cat!

British jazz pianist George Shearing dies at 91. Febuary 14, 2011. May he rest in peace.
