In the tavern, all night sittin' in the tavern
In the tavern singin' songs
Sparrow in the treetop, sparrow in the treetop
Though he loves his mate
Sparrow in the treetop, sparrow in the treetop
Scared of goin' home because it’s too darn late
Don’t look at me, sweetheart, with scorn in your eyes
Been out all night, gonna tell you no lies
Stopped in one place, heard them singin' a song
Heard them singin' a song
Like a lonely sparrow, started singin' along
Just singin'
In walked a blonde and, dear, she asked me to dance
I told that blonde that there wasn’t a chance
I love my kids and my beautiful wife
And my beautiful wife
That’s the honest truth, dear, and I swear by my life
Just singin'
In the tavern, all night sittin' in the tavern,
In the tavern singin' songs
There’s things I am sweetheart, and things that I ain’t
'Cause I’m a man and a man is no saint
Won’t you forgive 'cause I’m tellin' you true
'Cause I’m tellin' you true
I was in the tavern only thinkin' of you
Just singin'
Just singin'
In the tavern, all night sittin' in the tavern,
In the tavern singin' songs
I love the 1950s. My great grandpa loved his music and when he passed, my nana would play this all the time. She still does play it but now it's more me than anyone else
I was a teenager when this music was playing on the radio and it made a vast impression on me. I can still remember every word to every one and Guy's inflection. Mitch Miller really made these records work, but his work with other artists has been criticized.
Brings back many good memories of better times.
I am 80 now and still enjoy all the good music of the 40's and 50's.
Thanks to all who make this type of music available to us old folks.
Lovely happy music from a past era, it's not the Great American song book but it helps define the fifties in the same way that Gershwin did the twenties n thirties, it always makes me happy and I sing along like I did then. Guy Mitchell has gone like so many of that era , I am 86 now and these songs are so vibrant still and bring happy memories.
Thank you Cats for all the great songs you post. What memories they bring. I was 8 years old when I heard this on Martin Block's Make Believe Ballroom. on WNEW AM radio.
Down Memory lane we go again with Guy Michell a big favourite when I was in my teens. It's lovely to hear him again after all these years. Thanks for posting.
Another great hit for Mitch Miller and Guy Mitchell. Yes they don't make great music anymore. The late Steve Allen said "They've taken the beauty out of music". Sad!!
