Glenn Campbell, Art Funkel and others did great jobs on Jimmy's songs, but I absolutely cherish this song by Jimmy himself on his Ten Easy Pieces, a must have CD in my book. This song helped me through a hard time with my youngest son X no. of years ago. I was praying and the Good Lord brought it to my heart to forgive him and work it out. Praise to God for His many blessings.
Art Garfunkel's version spotlights the SINGER, this version spotlights the SONGWRITER and the PIANIST/singer -- this version is very "compositionally" oriented -- Jimmy Webb, imho, is maybe the best songwriter since Cole Porter. Jimmy Webb is the only artist ever to have received Grammy Awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. At the 1969 Grammy Awards, Webb accepted awards for "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Wichita Lineman," and "MacArthur Park." (awards for 3 DIFFERENT songs in one Grammy awards show -- simply amazing). He's simply one of a kind. btw, a book he wrote ("Tunesmith: Inside The Art Of Songwriting") should be required reading for anyone who wants to write songs and/or wants to understand the songwriting process.
Please never stop writing
I find you compose your best when you're hurting but please try and write when you're happy, too
My heart would truly break ...
This CD is great, Jimmy Webb singing his own songs, a must own. Love this one especially.......... Seems like "The Light" Himself has brought it to my remembrance here and there when I needed it in tough times, needing to remember to simply love, forgive and forget the shortcomings of all my assorted human folks in His grace, per His plan, to just love. Even when that is simply "All I know". Sometimes I also need to realize it was me that caused a lot of these shortcomings, but His love and light will bring us through in His grace and mercy. Jesus IS Lord! :-)
Jimmy this is beautiful. No other version comes close to expressing the words that are saturated with your own experience and drenched with your soul...thank you
