Way back in the day, like Ancient Greece, there was an Olympic sport of trumpet blowing. It is said Herodorus could blow two trumpets at once, producing incredible volume, and he was used to inspire armies, and strike fear in the enemy. Thems was the days
When Maynard played in the normal register (where all the rest of us have to play) you got this feeling that there was all this power that just hadn't been releases yet...then he releases it! Playing in normal register and at normal decibels he had a full quality that even there no no else had. He was a joy to listen to no matter where he played. A master at his instrument. I am 77 years old and started hearing Maynard in the '50's. NO one else matches him in either range or tone quality.
Excellent song. So bright and upbeat. One of those songs you'll be whistling or humming for days, and in my case, years to come. And the flourish at the end: mind blowing!
Do you really believe he has a bad or non-existent normal register? There's this. Is it high a lot? Yeah. Is it always screaming? No. Is it sometimes? Yeah. But he can control it, and that's what sets him apart from other people who can go that high.
I don't how Maynard Ferguson could've done this better. It's like he doesn't even make an effort to hit those notes, but yet he hits them every time! Wow.
I'm playing this original version transcribed by an ex member of my high school's show band on bass and I don't anyone in the trumpet section who would be able to play the solo this octive high! I can guarantee he might change the solo so it's an octive lower.
