As a unapologetic fan of electric miles, in my opinion, all though I love this record in the right listening mood you might hear a bit of frustration, this possibility foreshadowing his breakout of polite downbeat magazine jazz in the near future
This record, ESP, Sorcerer, and Nefertiti - music so brilliant and essential that it never became part of traditional jazz harmonic language. It could only have been created when it was and by whom it was. It is powerful, magical music, by turns dark and foreboding, playful and hilariously funny. There is BIG juju in this music.
Below this post William Petty makes a great point. This is the last straight ahead jazz album.I had the honor of telling Ron Carter at an award dinner for photographer Roy Decarava at the National Arts Club on Gramercy Park, NYC, that "the Quintet was the best band of all time in all genres, including the BEATles, assembled to make $" He stared at me. Then he walked away. A good friend for life was standing nearby with his future wife and smiled so broadly that I knew I was right. MILES SMILES provides pretty music for intelligent listeners. The Quintet is The Supergroup as a group. And FOOTPRINTS, composed by Shorter, is also on the album.SCREAM if you LOVE MILES.
