This was the first time this song (which had been on the folk circuit for a while) charted on the Pop charts. Evans did a good job with it; he switched here from the teen pop sound of "Seven Little Girls" to a more country-oriented style, as in with "Happy Go Lucky Me".

This is a great version of Midnight Special, possibly the best, and certainly my favorite. I remember laying in bed on a winter night listening to top-40 AM late night radio from a distant city (winter was when we could get the best signal out in the sticks where I lived), and the first time I heard this over the airwaves, I thought it was the best thing I had ever heard. Thanks for uploading it.

It's hard for me to decide if Paul Evans' or Big Joe Turner's version of this song is better,but I enjoy them both,& Paul Evans' is still sounding great even after all these years!

I was blown away by this when I found the 45 years ago. It's Evan's most rocking tune. Not sure if anyone has ever credited him, but that is the unmistakeable sound of Mickey "Guitar" Baker on the guitar.

Paul Evans was an under-appreciated singer, posting only four national chart hits -- the most-recognized being "Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat" in 1959. He was also a songwriter of note, penning several of Elvis' hits, plus "When" for The Kalin Twins and "Roses Are Red (My Love)" for Bobby Vinton.
