The song is clearly about metals.  Towards the end,  the singer,  P. Sellers throughout,  is hit by a considerable amount of scrap metal,  groaning  "I've been sponned".   He has been seriously injured by a load of Silver Plate On Nickel  (SPON).

Sellers was a master of accents, very catchy song.

Trying to figure out the reference "Any old iron" made by the Flesh Fair head in AI: Artificial Intelligence. He and the singer here both sound Irish, so I figured that maybe it was a reference to this song.
