I was reminded of a joke: A woman and child were riding in a bus in an Israeli city, and the mother was speaking to her son in Yiddish. Someone said to her "Hey Lady, you're in Israel now, and you can talk to your child in Hebrew!" "Sure", said the mother, "but I don't want him to forget he's Jewish!"

I love the Barry Sisters. My father was a show business musician and recorded with the Barry Sisters, playing the clarinet.

I'm from a Russian-German family. We're not Jewish, bit I grew up with these harmonies and also a rarely-known dialect, so this feels oddly familiar, yet different at the same time.

What memories! When my father brought home our first record player he brought also two LP's: one was the Barry Sisters and the other was Caterina Valenti. I listened to these two records for most of my childhood! Never learned Yiddish - it was my parent's 'secret' language - but always loved the Barry Sisters! What a shame young people today never got to see them.

I grew up with this music - it's in my soul. I also had a cousin who knew them and performed as well in bungalow colonies - in Florida - etc. I have tons of music from that cousin who wanted me to have her music when she died. I had occasion to speak to Claire Barry a few years ago when she performed in the Park in Queens. She was so nice - and had nice things to say about my cousin. I saw her and her sister perform years ago in one of my cousins pool club. The place was jammed - and were able to speak to them. Merna died shortly afterward. She probably was sick when they performed - but the show went on. There is nothing that makes me laugh - and cry - than this music.
