For those wondering, the musicians are lead guitarist Alan Caddy, rhythm guitarist George Bellamy, bass guitarist Heinz, drummer Clem Cattini, and pianist-organist Roger LaVern.

This track brings tears every time I hear it. I always did think of it as a sad but hopeful tune, from the first time I heard it in 1963. Like sitting in a room, weeping over a loss, but the sunrise is so beautiful outside.

To get the sound effects, Joe Meek stuck a microphone in a toilet and flushed it, recording the sound. He then played it back, half-speed, and backwards. So the sound of Telstar is a toilet flushing

I blame Last Podcast on the Left for making me love this song.

Meek shot his landlady dead and then shot himself. A French songwriter claimed he stole this tune and sadly Meek never got any royalties as it dragged on through the courts for years. This triggered a huge depression in him and he lived in poverty. Ironically three weeks after his suicide the final judgment came recognising that it was indeed HIS song. Very sad
