"On the Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe" was written by Johnny Mercer (lyrics) and Harry Warren (music) and introduced by Judy Garland in the 1946 MGM film "The Harvey Girls." It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
The Judy Garland/Merry Macs recording was released by Decca Records as catalog number 23436. The record reached the Billboard charts on September 20, 1945, at number ten, its only week on the chart.
The Santa Fe...a railway that had growing pains but would remain largely intact until its end, when it merged with the Burlington Northern to form BNSF Railway. R.I.P. ATSF 1859 - 1996. You are a Class 1 that left behind a legacy of fast intermodal trains, and some of the nicest passenger trains in the pre-Amtrak era, and of course some steam locomotives like the one you pioneered, the 2-10-2, known as the "Santa Fe" type and of course ATSF 3751 or ATSF 5000, the CF7, the Beep and so on.
Great song as always by the late great Judy Garland. Sad we lost her so many years ago and not long after her awesome work in the movie “the wizard of oz” as Dorothy Gale. I miss the olden classic days of the AT&SF railway. Of course since way back then Friday morning on the date of September 22nd, 1995 the Santa Fe was no more as the papers had been signed for good and all their lines or tracks changed ownership and they now belong to Burlington Northern Santa Fe as both railroads merged to form one company. But it made way for new and more exciting things and train watching for all BNSF railway train buffs especially here in the Midwest.
