This man wrote thousands of songs, and was considered the King of Calypso. He was actually an American citizen, born in Brooklyn, but went to Trinidad with his family when he was two. He performed frequently in Harlem and traveled all around the world. He predicted one day that Calypso music would become tremendously popular in the US long before it did.

Calypso and mento led to ska, reggae, soka, dancehall and blended with with Afro-Latin styles to give us some of the most amazing music of the last 80 years.

Wilmoth Houdini real name Frederick Wilmoth Hendricks was born on 25th November 1895 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. In 1916 he started his career in calypso singing with a large carnival group called the African Millionaires. He also started working on cargo ships and travelling extensively before arriving in New York around 1927. Not long after his arrival in New York he began cutting calypso records with local bands for Decca Records, notably Gerald Clark's Night Owls. Gerald Clark was also a Trinidad native who migrated to New York. Houdini released well over a hundred different 78s between 1928 and 1940. Also interestingly Houdini's children formed one of the first early rap groups in Harlem during the 1960's and their battle raping style was inspired by the regular Extempo Calypso battles that their father took part in against Duke of Iron based in New York and other top calypsonians from Trinidad like Lord Invader, Lord Executor, etc who regularly came to New York to perform and record.
