This music is infectious. I keep coming back to get away.I think I know Bix by the way he plays. Smooth operator, generous,with heck of a good sense of humor. but very quiet and reserved at times.

Started listening to Bix and the gang about 1 year ago. every musician is superb .But the real skill is how they as a group pull this off. I have heard some musicians today try their stuff but cant quite get it .One of the best cornet/ trumpet sounds ever. He adds his own licks but never overplays the group. Very lyrical, little flourishes here and there ,brassy when he needs to be yet delicate his playing is mesmerizing. Even the last bar is perfect.

There has long been a controversy about this recording. It's one of my favorites, but legend says it wasn't one of Bix's. The legend: he thought the take was going to be rejected because he came in at the wrong time at 1:49, so he blew wildly on the out-chorus. Then he was less than happy when the record was released. This was recounted in "Bix, Man and Legend," by Richard Sudhalter and "Remembering Bix" by Ralph Berton.

Right on spot, Allan. Rollini is in a league of his own....only bass sax player have ever heard that matches his level is Juan Chamorro!! His groups are worth checking out....some of their tracks are off the charts. Juli Aymi on "Thats Aplenty" is one of the greatest Clarinet takes have ever heard....and I have heard most of them...and the rest of the group is an A including the 13 year olde girl on soprano sax!!

although Bix is the stand out musician here,what a difference the great Adrian Rollini makes to the band.

Bix really shines in the ride-out chorus!

IMHO the trombonist is too far from the microphone on all of Bix's recordings. Bill Rank, the trombonist on most of the recordings, had a great tone and should have been featured more prominently. Maybe Adrian Rollini, the famous bass saxophonist, wanted all the bass background licks for himself? After Rollini, the unmistakable bass sax sound sadly disappeared from popular music.
