How much do I love you?
I’ll tell you no lie
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?
How many times in a day
Do I think of you?
How many roses are
Sprinkled with dew?
How far would I travel
To be where you are?
How far is the journey
From here to a star?
And if I ever lost you
How much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?
How far would I travel
To be where you are?
How far is the journey
From here to a star?
And if I ever lost you
How much would I cry?
How deep is the ocean?
How high is the sky?
What a soulful cat. A sheer pleasure just to be in the same room as him with his infectious smile. Had a chance to hear and hang with him quite a few times. One of the finest on his instruments. Warm and lyrical with a full and effortless tone. Can never get my fill.
I sat next to Mr Payne on a bus from Camden to NYC around the time CERUPA was released. He had an Alto with him, to use that night, I guess in addition to his Bari. We talked about music, the musicians he played with- so many, he showed me a folded photo in his wallet of Lester Young and talked of him at length. He told me to listen to Bud Powell, and so many others. He kindled a lifelong passion for Jazz past and present that I will carry to my grave. God Bless him.
