My brother sent me this down his mobile one dark foggy evening after he'd been driving for miles after getting lost in the French countryside. Eventually he said, he 'd found this old hotel where everything was candlelit and they did roast ox and boar and there was this olde worlde peasant party laid on and anyway about an hour later he rang there was this near riot in the village - someone had seen a firebreathing monster that could run, without horse, faster than a frightened mare and they were smashing his car and blaming him as the sorcerer who owned it, now the line starts going really crackly and fades out, he just has time to say he's hiding from some knights dressed up in armour and a bloke in a long red robe they call Le Grande Inquisitore Generale ....

I can't believe this has been here for almost a year, and no one has commented! Anyway, I'll tell you an old joke about bagpipes. Q:What's the difference between an onion and a bagpipe? A:Nobody cries when you cut up a bagpipe! Seriously, though I love bagpipes. They're a much maligned instrument, with an ancient history. They originated in the Near East, and were spread across Europe by returning Crusader knights. They remained popular throughout the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, and slowly declined in popularity until the 1700s, and were eventually banned by the English government because the Scots and Irish used them as a form of psychological warfare. Though the ban was eventually lifted, I still use them for this purpose because a good recording of bagpipe music played at high volume is the perfect thing for dispelling loud, rowdy French Canadians from your front lawn, which is why I played bagpipe music every St. Jean Baptiste's Day when I lived in Vanier.
