LOOKIN' AT THE WORLD THROUGH A WINDSHIELD
WRITERS JERRY CHESNUT, MIKE HOYER
When I was just a little bitty kid I remembered one time Mama said
Daddy sends you all his love from Frisco Bay
I didn’t understand till I was grown
why my Daddy didn’t spend a little time at home
Instead of runnin' around the country that way
Now I’m looking at the world through a windshield
And see everything in a little bit different light
I got a sweet little thing I’m wantin' to see in Nashville
And I’m down around Dallas and a’rollin' on fast tonight
Long strips of rubber that you see
Were burned off of this rig by the likes of me
And they’ll ride along the highways in this land
I’m gonna sign my name in this diesel smoke
And let the ones that come behind me choke
Now I’m looking at the world through a windshield
Watchin' it a flyin' by me at the right
I got a sweet little thing I’m wantin' to see in Nashville
And I’m down around Dallas and a’rollin' on fast tonight
I’ve pushed this rig through sleet and rain
And I’ve driven through the rough terrain
Of the Rockies to the docks of old L.A.
On down that old Pacific shore, sing north and headin' for Baltimore
Of somethin' 'bout two thousand miles away
Now I’m looking at the world through a windshield
Watchin' it a flyin' by me at the right
I got a sweet little thing I’m wantin' to see in Nashville
And I’m down around Dallas and a’rollin' on fast tonight
Im 49 been drivin since i was 20 the old days were good an real the older truks with some power an a big ole steerin wheel an good soundin pipes was an addiction
Love his songs, spent many quarters in jukeboxes listening to him. My favorite is Girl On The Billboard.
Hear is another great one by long deceased at the age of 29 a driver of Hennis Freight from Winston-Salem NC. Lonnie Erving wrote a song that goes along with the rest of those old time trucking song and it’s called “Gooseball Brown”. You old timers know exactly what he is talking about in that 1960 song.
Driving a truck is as bad as being hooked on drugs. Once it’s in your blood, trucking is all you ever want to do.
I remember when there was no A/C or P/S, as well as tractors having 2 stick gear levers. Cut my teeth on a 185 hp thermodyne B-61 tandem and a 2 stick duplex.
I'm 17 and trucking has been In my blood I started riding with my dad when I was so small my feet stuck straight off the seat, a kid once he's big enough to see over the dash never recovers from seeing the road and all the trucks and listening to his dad tell all the stories of the road over and over again and never complaining, once driving gets in your blood no one understands your love for it as much as you do. Drivers in the day of old were real drivers men who loved there occupation
Driving truck is something that is hard to describe.....I love it and I hate it...but I will never let the road go, once its in your blood.....it owns you.
Keep them 18 wheels a rollin' out there. Keep the shiny side up, and the greasy side down. Keep topping those hills, and popping those pills. Keep that big ole' diesel straight, and don't be late. God bless you all, and be safe traveling, I'm 10/10 on the side, I'm gone bye-bye!
Driving truck is an addiction that never lets you go. This is one of these great old songs that made sense as opposed to what they play today. RIP Del Reeves we will always miss you.
Great "Trucking " song by Del. Right up there with Sovine, Dudley, and Curless. Del Reeves deserves to be in the CMHOF. Better then some who are in it.
