Roy's version will never be topped. Another BEAUTIFUL work of art by Fred and Roy. On this version,at the 2:07 mark, this becomes absolutely DEVINE ! The music and Genes voice along with the singers are just perfection to my ears. !!
A Great song By Gene Pitney. From the album "BLUE GENE". In fact, I consider this Gene's BEST work, on this album and also the album "I MUST BE SEEING THINGS".
In my eyes Gene Pitney was one of the most sincere and best vocalists I have ever heard.
He is in the ranks of Roy Orbison, Jay Black of Jay & the Americans and Tony Williams of the Platters. A Powerful voice and sings from the heart.
Stop trying to prove who you think is the best version. Music is subjective and personal to whoever is listening. No-one is right or wrong. Just enjoy what you enjoy. Any attempt to prove your favourite is the best is just an exercise in arrogance.
love this song but prefer roy and yet this is one of my fav singers of all time roy orbison sang without any effort needed i read that he was learning a song in studio called walk on he did it in one shot both these singers are gods of popular music
One of those rare gems recorded exquisitely by both Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney -- two of the most brilliant, breathtaking male voices in the history of rock. While Roy is always first in my heart, Gene definitely runs a close second. In the case of this particular song I have a slight preference for Gene's version because of the brief bridge-verse he includes towards the end (".... that you no longer want me, that you no longer need me, that you've gone and you've left me, left me here all alone...."). I don't know if the addition was by the songwriter, the arranger, or Gene himself, but it's very effective both musically and dramatically. Nevertheless, both versions are masterpieces in their own right. R.I.P. Roy and Gene -- two irreplaceable, incomparable musical geniuses who will be missed for many decades to come.
