This song was often sung by Patrick Joseph O´Donoghue. (but only a couple of lines at a time) Perhaps Paddy as I knew him in the 1950`s didn`t know all the words. No matter. Paddy was a tractor driver on a farm in Cheshire and I was a lad of 12 or 13. A typical Irishman, Pat had laughing blue eyes, a huge sense of humour and I never forgot his singing and whistling. It´s pure nostalgia to hear the song in full by that great Irish tenor, John McCormack. Grateful for Internet!!

I was 9 year old when I learnt this song 64 years back. I have never forgotten it. Cannot hold a tune at all now.

I am of the Beatles and Elvis Generation but I can still appreciate a voice like this. May he rest in Peace, Count John McCormack.

Actually he was Count John McCormack. He was a Papal Count, a very distinguished honour in his day and still is but I am not aware of any present day ones.
