Shades of night are falling and I’m lonely
Standing on the corner feeling blue
Sweethearts out for fun
Pass me one by one
Guess I’ll wind up like I always do With only
Me and my shadow
Strolling down the avenue
Me and my shadow
Not a soul to tell our troubles to And when it’s twelve o’clock
We climb the stair
We never knock
For nobody’s there
Just me and my shadow
All alone and feeling blue
When the sun sets on the far horizon
And the parlor lamps begin to glow
Jim and Jack and John
Put their slippers on They’re all set but we’restill on the go So lonely
Me and my shadow
Strolling down the avenue
Me and my shadow
Not a soul to tell our troubles to And when it’s twelve o’clock
We climb the stair
We never knock
For nobody’s there
Just me and my shadow
All alone and feeling blue
I've had this tune in my head and the line "me and my shadow strolling down the Avenue" for over a dozen years. In my head, though, and when singing to my cat, "Shadow", it was "... walking down the boulevard". What I didn't remember is that it was a lonelyness blues song. Previous searches proved fruitless, turning up several songs with the same title, but none with the right tune or lyrics. I was beginning to think that that there was no such song.
Would love to know when this was recorded, it's clearly before drugs, cigarettes and booze completely destroyed her voice. Her phrasing and breath control are absolutely spot-on amazing!
So much emotion in her voice...its as if her voice can tell the story without the words. This is true for all her songs.. She is a true legend. Beautiful talent.
Oh Judy I hope your happy where ever you might be! You had such a difficult life and hardship I wish I could have gone back in time and give you a big hug! Tell everyone in MGM to leave you alone!! You were beautiful just the way you were!!!
