The wine it was drunk, the ship it was sunk
The shot it was dead, all the sorrows were drowned
The birds they were clouds, the brides and the shrouds
And as we drew south the mist it came down
The wooded ravine to the wandering stream
The serpent he moved, but no-one would say
The depths of the waters, the bridge which distraught us And brought to me thoughts of the ill-fated day
The temples were filled with the strangest of creatures
One played it by ear on the banks of the sea
That one was found but the others they went under
Oh the tears which are shed, they won’t come from me The methods of madness, the pathos and the sadness
God help you all, the insane and wise
The black and the white, the darkness of the night
I see only smoke from the chimneys arise
The pilot he flew all across the sky and woke me He flew solo on the mercury sea
The dream it came back, all about the tall brown people
The sacred young herd on the phosphorus sand
She could of been a CLOSE Janis Joplin of England..Maybe...Excellent voice...Plays many instruments played...More like an English version of Joni Mitchell...Too bad she died too young like all the other talented females that have perished too young...
I feel guilty about my beautiful Sandy , I visited Her grave in Putney Vale Cemetery in June 2011 and I didn't take any flowers , the grave had none at all at the time , nevermind I have pledged to return one day with a floral tribute to the great Lady
The Tall Brown People, The Mercury Sea, The Phosphorus Sun... How Cryptic. If we indeed leave our bodies and travel other dimensions when we sleep and dream, Where was she going? And is she there now?
John, don't worry too much about that. I have put flowers on her grave for all who can't get there.
On the 35th anniversary of her death, almost to the hour, I cast some roses on to the sea in Tobermory. Just after high water, on an ebb tide, they quickly disappeared.
Who knows where they went after that.
I plan to back at her graveside on 06-01-14
I know that like art, music is very subjective, but I do genuinely pity those 11 people that felt the need to click on the 'dislike' button! There are many music lovers out there who would really appreciate the talent of Sandy Denny, but are unlikely to get the chance to hear her, unless someone enlightens them. There are at least 11 people out there that were lucky enough to find their way here, but just didn't get it. Such a shame.
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. She was a genius, so sad we lost her so early. She was my age and she would have been one of the greatest singer song writers if she had lived. As it was she will be remembered for some great songs including this one.
When the camera focuses on her hands I couldn't avoid wondering what brilliant intelligence lies behind that hands playing upon the piano keys. What a dreadful loss dying so young!
Alexandra the Great: From her first solo album, this song concerns a dream about/death of Martin Lamble, first drummer of Fairport Convention, who was in a fatal car crash, May 1969.
