I used to visit all the very gay places
Those come what may places
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life
To get the feel of life
From jazz and cocktails
The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces
With distingué traces
That used to be there you could see where
They’d been washed away
By too many through the day
Twelve o’clocktails
Then you came along with your siren’s song
To tempt me to madness
I thought for a while that your pointed smile
Was tinged with the sadness
Of a great love for me Ah, yes, I was wrong
Again I was wrong
Life is lonely again
And only last year
Everything seemed so assured
Now life is awful again
And the thoughtful of heart
Could only be a bore
A week in Paris will ease the bite of it All I care is to smile in spite of it
I’ll forget you I will
And yet you are still
Burning inside my brain
Romance is mush
Stifling those who strive
I’ll live a lush
Life in some small dive
And there I’ll be While I rot with the rest
Of those whose lives are lonely too
a pink drink in a blue glass,or, pearls that twirl beneath the shimmer and glimmer of lights that glow,as the music flows, and a candle flame blows in a subtle, silent wind as love ebbs within hearts afire.
Sassy's register is to right for this song. You just can't sing this song "pretty." It's after hours music. Down and out music. Someone here has been there, done that. So it calls for a smokey, dark brown contralto to take us there. Anita O'Day comes to mind, also. This is not a song for someone who sings "pretty." Kay Davis comes to mind. Her voice is just not right for this song. After all, the lyric tells of life at the margins.
i have this album. i took it to her concert at Piedmont Park 6 months before she passed. I will always remember she said to the audience "please don't take any pictures, I'm not feeling well today". Two large fans on her right & left blew during that hot summer day. She performed flawlessly. Afterwards, I was not going to attempt making my way to get her autograph out of respect. But I did get her drummer's... thanks sassy...
Lyric:
I used to visit all the very gay places
Those come what may places
Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life
To get the feel of life from jazz and cocktails
The girls I knew had sad and sullen gray faces
With distingué traces, that used to be there

Siren song to tempt me to madness
I thought for awhile that your poignant smile
Was tinged with the sadness of a great love for me
Ah yes, I was wrong, again, I was wrong
Life is lonely again and only last year
Everything seemed so sure, now life is awful again
A trough full of hearts could only be a bore
A week in Paris will ease the bite of it
All I care is to smile in spite of it
I'll forget you, I will, while yet you are still
Burning inside my brain
Romance is mush, stifling those who strive

Definitive Perfection! When I get a chance to make a request at a jazz club I always ask for this. A true test for any jazz singer...and the opportunity for her to really have an opportunity to be vunerable but be transcendent! So far so good....
Phenomenal version of this. Both the orchestration and the vocals by Ms. Sarah. She was amazing. Closest I ever got to her was being at Capitol Records recording in one studio while she was in the next one down the hall. I was so young, I had no idea what the big deal was! She was one of the best all time vocalists in the jazz genre.
The song itself is great ,and when any great singer starts it, it's a whole story about colours of life and the subtlety of the singer painting the scenes.Thks.
