Although he isn't mentioned in same breath as Dylan, I think that Sly's lyrics are right up there with him. Like Dylan, his lyrical content consisted of observations of society that where cryptic yet colorful and thought provoking.
Great message. If a woman has a baby cute and it's illegitimate to boot, people will talk and say that ain't right, but love shines through different lights.
Half the world goes around
And everybody's getting down!
So, how could you wish her pain
Because she has a maiden name?
Why? We are living in a world, then and now, that is a crossword puzzle!
This song never made the charts. Along with many others of his, it should have!
I saw the man live and watched him leave the stage come back do an encore bowed for at least five minutes drove the audience to a frenzy while he blew kisses out to the crowd. the true essence of a ring master. It truly was something to wittness and remember. That was forty years ago and it still puts a smile on my face. Yeah might as well go play sing a simple song!
Good idea to post some material from this totally underrated album.
I love 'High on you' (what a bass line) and 'Organize'.
This music was 20 years ahead of time when it was published, meanwhile it's 40 years ahead of time after all what's going on in music these days.
When I listen to this, the turnaround is a trick - this doesnt sound like enough chord changes to match up into eight bars - how the hell did this man work and think - amazing. Plus the cat mixed, played keys, bass, sneaky blues guitar, better-that-average harmonica, even at Woodstock - for 10 seconds worth of musical arrangement, but laid down right on time.) Incredible.
First ever sly stone im hearing... this is an experience in itself. To finally hear what the legend himself sounded like.
Music wise the mans a genius, this song is the epitome of funk. First impression 10million/10.
