When I first heard this song, I immediately heard a Beatles influence. When I listen to it now, I hear The Apples In Stereo and not The Beatles.

Wow. Forget the lyrics for a moment, the primary template for main vocal is John Lennon's 'She said, she said', and the over all structure uses various elements of Strawberry fields forever. It's a shame the song is so blatantly derivative because it's very solid effort.
There is no right or wrong in art... there is nothing intrinsically bad about honest creative homage to The Beatles... but they could have been a little more adventurous with the lyrics.

Exactly! Jeff Lynne is arguably a greater influence on the Apples than the Beatles are. Hell, Travellers in Time and Space sounds undeniably similar to Time.
