This wasn't in 1966, this was probably a year ago during March 7, of 1965. Brian Wilson was already working on Pet Sounds and eventually Smile. Mike Love already had a beard when the Beach Boys started making Pet Sounds which was the very beginning of 1966 after the beach boys were on tour, while Brian Wilson and Tony Asher were creating the album.
Nobody cares about this stuff but me, but for the record, I saw this show and it was April 1965 not 1966 because, as someone else pointed out, they did Help Me Rhonda on the same show and it was on the charts then. I remember reading that NBC specially constructed a sound stage just for Andy Williams, and it shows here in fidelity.
The only 60's group to truly humble the all-mighty Beatles. No one could sing like this. In a year or so, Wilson's psychedelic masterpiece Pet Sounds would be released and floor everyone all over again -- especially McCartney -- and precipitate Sgt. Pepper. I've been a lifelong Beatles fanatic, but now I'm in my mid-40's and I've recently discovered the genius of The Beach Boys...and Brian Wilson in particular. I've always known their music, but now I'm hearing it differently and I'm realizing what a force they were. Pet Sounds is something I'll spend the rest of my life listening to and discovering new harmonies and sounds and ideas. In contrast, I feel as though I've already exhausted Sgt. Pepper. However, without Brian Wilson, there would be no Sgt. Pepper, and when BW dies and there's gonna be LOTS of tears and then people will realize how towering this gentle genius of a man was.
Its hard to comprehend how great these guys were in their heyday. Brian had a great high voice for their songs and Carl had good one but it was the chemistry of all of them together that made them great. Look how many great songs they had with Mike Loves nasaly lead singing. Pure genius on the part of Brian Wilson. This is how I choose to remember one of the greatest home made bands of all time.
This harmony is absolutely heavenly! This is one of my favorites from The Beach Boys. They were all pitch perfect.
Brian Wilson's young voice is one of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard. When he closes his eyes while harmonizing, he looks to be in complete bliss...and so am I, listening to him sing. It is so sweet when Brian glances at the other boys during the performance, and I get goose bumps when he does his solo parts.
Carl's beautiful voice would soon emerge as the best, but before Brian had his breakdown, his voice came straight from Heaven. His voice here brings tears to my eyes. God bless Brian Wilson.
