I love this song and video, and just noticed a lovely part of the song is missing from this version: the ascending bridge about "The neon lights, the cigarettes; the rented rooms and rented cars; crowded streets and empty bars..." Hmmm...
Heard the annie lennox version first when I was finishing college in Malaysia. Listened to the original Blue Nile version on my flight to Edinburgh for uni. I arrived in the city with the backdrop of Edinburgh castle bathed in the downtown lights. Imagine the impression it had on me ... that was 13 year s ago. I'm now living in Glasgow, and everytime I listen to Blue Nile, I still get the spine tingly feeling. Soundtrack to my life.
I remember buying the cassette back in 1989, I was 14 at the time. Every song on 'Hats' was brilliant. I thought it was one of the most beautiful albums I ever heard at that time--a MASTERPIECE! Even now at the age of 42, this album transcends time. Never gets old.
I consider it one of the blessings of my life that I got to hear the Blue Nile. This is one of the most beautiful, evocative, memorable albums you will ever hear. I'd just come out of a marriage and turned 40 when I came across these guys. I just turned 60 so lucky me to have 20 years of listening to this. I'm going to add it to the list of music I want playing at my wake! lol
