Cadets' cover is slicker, but definitely not as hip as the original. Cadets got some of the lyrics wrong, and the NY Dolls cover of the cover messed up even more.

I'm a little more favorable to the Cadets version. I think it's slicker, but it is just my opinion.

no less annoying

Admittedly, this is somewhat cruder than the more familiar version by The Cadets, but that's part of its raw appeal. In either case, a very creative doo wopper that presaged the comedy vocal group (as doo wopper was known at the time) tunes by The Coasters and The Cadillacs.

Bought this back when. I don't think this was meant to be the Jayhawks greatest achievement. It's a 'fun' song. Admittedly, the Cadets had a smoother harmony. Thinking the Jayhawks lead vocalist had a better singing voice than speaking voice, maybe? Still, it's a funny song, not romantic at all, despite the fact that he made it back to the States to be with his girlfriend, after hitching a ride with a whale. Loved hearing this again, thanks for posting.

How odd that two groups would cover this, and the second group, The Cadets, made it to the charts and this original didn't. (Well, actually, this one isn't as good.) But i just wonder why The Cadets, or any other group, would cover it again. Close to 60 years ago, so who knows.

BTW, the flip side, MY ONLY DARLING is perhaps the greasiest record ever made.

The Jayhawks existed back in the 60's?? I just heard about them recently, thinking they were a NEW group!  They do a song called: "Smile", it's pretty too. It's a ballad. That is if TODAY'S Jayhawks ARE the ones doing "Stranded in the Jungle".

I like this version. Has fun element. Just some guys hanging out and doing a sort of voice over newsreel story. Last bit is different and has a girl singing too. Two records for one

The term doo wop didn't exist at the time this style of music was popular At the time it was Rhythm and Blues. I hate the term Oldies But Goodies, but not as much as Doo Wop.
