Brilliant song from a brilliant band. Most people only remember them for Sugar Baby Love but they were so much more than that.

Love the Rubettes very much, but when they're singing country, they're superb. After more than 30 years, everytime I hear it, it still touches my heart.

Best thing they ever did ,this   was   so different from what they had been doing and my all time fav  Rubettes song , I think it was their last song to chart to before they succumbed down the road  into the nostalgic cabaret  route .

I was 13 when this came out. And it`s still as perfect now as it was when I first heard it.

The missing ingredient from the current Rubettes incarceration is definately Tony Thorpe. With Tony the band was progressing from the 50's-inspired pop to a Country-Rock hybrid. After his departure the band reverted back to their old sound.

I agree. It is weird. They were the most "popsical" group ever. I loved their songs as they were a bit of a sound track for my youth but I understand the "bubble gum" label but those guys matured and were allowed to. Their later stuff is great, I think, quite musically assured with good lyrics. I had to eat my assumptions.

I like their doo-wop, but this a great one. I think some of their best stuff came from what I think of as their flannel shirt days

A bit of an Eagles/Eric Clapton influence on this one I think.

You called me to tell me goodbye I told you that I was some other guy You said that you'd phone when he got home You told me to tell him that you'd called Now you don't have to tell me goodbye You don't have to hear me cry You don't have to tell me to go 'Cause baby baby I know The phone rang again for some time I knew it was you on the line I hurt you before I knew it for sure Forgive me for being unkind Now you don't have to tell me goodbye You don't have to hear me cry You don't have to tell me to go 'Cause baby baby I know baby I know When you called much later that night I said he'd out 'til daylight But if there's something I can tell him Forgive me for asking but is something not right And than you broke down and cried Told me you loved him But your love had been denied He didn't want you no more I told her don't you be so sure He'll never want you to go 'Cause baby baby I know Baby I know I know baby I know I know

A real "Country" ballad feel to it. When sung by this member of the band the sound is so unlike their 50's-inspirred songs. it's beautiful!
