As a very young child I somehow found a copy of the sensational Pleasure Principle in my home. No idea how it got there as my parents thought popular music was the devil's work & my siblings had no interest in the electronic one. Remember whacking the vinyl disc onto my old mans archaic record player that he'd bought in a second hand shop. A record player so old that it had the function of not only playing speeds of 33 & 45 but 78 as well. The scene therefore a young kid, a prehistoric record player in a bedroom in a run down terraced house in a northern town but a sound & mood created that lives with me still today.
follow up to pleasure principles cars single ... the pleasure principle really is one of the very rare albums where every track is a masterpiece like never mind the bollocks ... paranoid ... la woman ... sgt peppers .. et al ... considering rock and roll is about sixty plus years into its never ending life , up to now theres only a handfull of epic lp s the pleasure principle is one of them ... this was the least commercial song on the album ... any of the rest would easily of been the third no. one for numan after cars ... but he released this song ... complex ... a real piece of genious ... but no radio friendly song ... proves the integrity of gary numan and his music ... well done gary ... time is the real judge of what is good or rubbish ... this will be listened to still in a thousand years ...
A lovely lovely song about coming to terms with his new found fame. When A-Ha released Take On Me in the mid 80's it was hailed as a breakthrough video using animation and live footage.....WRONG...this was the first and it was 6yrs or so earlier!!!!
They won't come back
You know it's always the same
And they're sure to forget
Saying "everyone lies"
So I'm down to this
I'm down to walking on air
And you're here by my side
With all your waving and smiles
Please keep them away
Don't let them touch me
Please don't let them lie
Don't let them see me
Still so underrated! This song is amazing, and really in it's own league. Please push no more is also amazing, and even more personal than this one. Love Numan!
My older brother used to have this on 7" along with some early OMD singles. Definitely influenced my music taste as I used to play it on his record player when he went to work. If I remember it had an awesome live version of Bombers on the B side
