Eydie could sing ANY! song, and make it grand style, like she had a strapless gown, long flowing, Next to a grand piano, and a 50 piece orchestra. She could do Pop goes the weasel into a classic.
It would behoove
anyone who appreciates this song
to Google the short interview segment featuring the songwriter Cindy Walker explaining how she composed this song. Just type or speak:
CINDY WALKER TALKS ABOUT
YOU DON'T KNOW ME. You shan't regret it!
It just occurred to
me that this is the
first country channel I have
noticed putting up
a pop singer's version of a classic country song. And I appreciate it. It was great for pop
radio eons ago to
give country songs a shot to
become "crossover hits," and often it worked. But country stations didn't return the favor and play pop songs, except
by Elvis and the
Everly Brothers, who were actually
country but veered
into pop and rock.
But more troublesome, country stations would not even program COUNTRY
songs sung by pop singers, which was a stupid mistake. I could
only have furthered country to do so. Al Martino consistently recorded country
classics that I thought were better than any of
his country counterparts. He
was the greatest country music star who never was! But he was
shut out of country radio. All
this eventually
backfired, and is
partly responsible
for the destruction of country music as we knew it.
This may not be what you'd call classic country, but it's beautiful. I used to sing this great old song that I learned from Ray Charles, got a lot of requests for it and I'm not a country singer either! It's just a great old song. Eydie's version is just sublime!
* I" ve been a fan ever since I heard her sing from my Dad's old records the clarity of her voice it's so beautiful I love her voice ! Thank you for sharing ! ♥
