Don't you think it's incredible how the bird reforms and comes back to life? The way I've always seen it by the lyrics is he's in love and waiting on someone who'll never appear. He remains stagnant, lamenting that everything he has of this person, even his memories, are just a dream. One day he wakes up and leaves. Using the Oni metaphor, it is the other person's turn to chase him because he's done waiting.
