Ya know, I can't say I know what this song means for certain, but she must have chosen the number 84000 for a reason. However, the only significance I can attach to this number comes from Buddhist traditions. According to that tradition, Buddha had given 84,000 different teachings to various types of people based on their needs.
Now, if she really is referring to this tradition, I truly wonder what she is trying to say in the song. So many different ways to interpret it.........
Don't sweat it brother. This is a brilliant song, full of emotion. I was just wondering why she chose that particular number - might not be important at all.
A Poem Inspired By Shawn Colvin
My Favorite Delusion
you are my favorite delusion
but one day being crazy
will be in vogue
where crazy reigns
crazy pours
in my dreams
all the faces are so hazy
I’m a hobo I’m a rogue
I ride on empty trains
but one face could be yours
I used to bribe the twilight moon
to help me read the signs
now I crawl around in the zoo
looking for flat fine lines
one could lead to you
now I mix with the fog
I listen for candle light
I keep my ear to the ground
for the sound of an anvil
before the next word is found
I listen to the voices
try to break the code
I ask every rollin’ stone
on every lonesome road
what it was like to be kicked by you
I sleep in graveyards
I sing for ghosts
of murdered blues
I ask em who done it
it must have been you
I sing for them
and them for me
but there is no cure
we never should have listened
to a voice so pure
Shawn Colvin
my most beautiful delusion
for sure
