Thank you Jay Dee for putting us to incredible joints like this one. Sampling is a medium in Hip hop that is vilified and under appreciated. We hear people call sampling "stealing" but don't have much to say when many of the biggest records in music history were due to people who never got the credit they deserved. Shoutouts to everyone that can appreciate great ears for music!
Pretty little track, although, yeah, Dilla brought me. It's interesting he created his"loop" out of sections from different ends of the track. Also, House Shoes tells that the "Get A Hold" beat was created in 12 minutes. Would have been less, but Dilla was having trouble getting the drums right.
Holding hands and walking with my girlfriend in the spring of 1967 in Connecticut....listening to the Neon album when it was new in 1967...and this tune..then we married in 1972..and still together today...42 years...what a ride..:-) Terrific!!! ..thank you, Cyrkle!!
1:16 "Now I'm lost and wondering, as if waking suddenly, was it real or just a dream, where is she, where is she. Was she really here today, or was I just drifting back to the times I heard her say, she loved me, she loved me. Was she really here today." THERE ARE 2 POSSIBILITIES!! SHE WAS REAL, I.E., HE WASN'T HAVING A DELUSION, I.E., SHE LOVED HIM (BECAUSE HE'S A BAD MAN)!! ON THE OTHER HAND, SHE WASN'T REAL, I.E., HE WAS HAVING A DELUSION, I.E., SHE DIDN'T LOVE HIM (BECAUSE HE'S A GOOD MAN)!!
I'd dig this song weather Dilla sampled it or not... But the fact that he did makes it much sweeter. Get Hold was my first introduction to James Yancey the producer and that song truly changed my life
