I’m feelin' mighty lonesome
Haven’t slept a wink
I walk the floor from nine to four
In between I drink
Black coffee
Love’s a hand-me-down brew
I’ll never know a Sunday
In this weekday room
I’m talkin to the shadow
One o’clock till four
And Lord, how slow the moments go
And all I do is pour
Black coffee
Since the blues caught my eye
I’m hangin' out on Monday
My Sunday dreams to dry
Now man was born to go a lovin'
But was a woman born to weep and fret
And stay at home and tend her oven
And drown her past regrets
In coffee and cigarettes
I’m moonin' all the mornin'
Moanin' all the night
And in between it’s nicotine
And not much heart to fight
Black coffee
Feelin' low as the ground
It’s drivin' me crazy
This thinkin' 'bout my baby
Might maybe come around
Come around
Bonnie was dope she could swing with the best of them .. there voices are so seasoned .... some singers can’t make transitions .. like she can sing a pop song or gospel and still keep the integrity of the song her voice can match what ever genre
I agree that this is one of the best ever versions. She really wrings the heart and soul out of this song. I've rarely heard a singer get so much out of this standard. Now that I think of it, this IS the best version.
I read somewhere about Bonnie singing this song but it is the first time I am hearing it. WOW! This whole family is so talented including their brothers. Bonnie sings, writes, tap dances and now she seems to be on the straight and narrow path to a more healthy life, spending a lot of time with her big Sis. Anita. Good for her. R.I.P. sweet June!
Mmm, mmm, mmmm. My first go-to memory is Sarah Vaughan singing a live version of Black Coffee in Copenhagen. And then I just listened to this for the first time and am blown away, too. Mmmm, just love that instrumental swell, too. I had no idea the Pointer Sisters scatted up a storm, too. One of my favorites - amongst a bunch of their music being favorite.
I remember this version being played to me in 1990, I feel in love with it straight away, for me it is without any doubt the best version ever of this song.
