I respect anyone who says Trilogy is his best album (because it's amazing), but Kiss Land for me is untouchable. So here's what I think happened - The Weeknd recorded this song with the original sample from Machine Gun from Portishead, 100% confident that it would be approved for use. Then Geoff Barrow received a cocky , rude and arrogant letter from the Weeknd's music publisher, and thought, no you can't use it you cheeky bastards. The Weeknd then panicked, thought "Shit, what can I do ? I'm already committed to this song, and it's finished" . Then some smart arse suggests rerecording the sample, changing it ever so slightly that way we can weasel out of any copyright claims and deny we ever asked for the sample in the first place. But, oh shit - Geoff kept the letter ....
